So last weekend we traveled along the south coast of Norway and spent a night at Grimstad.
This little town enjoys an ideal location between Arendal and Kristiansand.
What one will first notice is the white-painted wooden buildings, the cozy narrow streets and the picturesque alleyways. The archipelago outside Grimstad is full of of islands and islets which are easy to visit by boat. During summer the islands are packed with boats and sea lovers.
Grimstad is also the city where Henrik Ibsen spent part of his youth and wrote his first play, so of course you can find a museum dedicated to him here.
When we arrived in the city the sun was about to set and we were tired from the trip. We arrived at our hotel, Scandic Grimstad.
The hotel was wonderful.
The rooms have a traditional Norwegian interior and a our balcony view was great (photo above and below)! Don’t you agree?
We really enjoyed our room which was elegant, quite and comfortable. The room had paintings of old Grimstad and was extra spacious.
Even though we were tired and we liked our balcony and room very much we wouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore the city. Also after 5 hours of driving and sitting in a car we had to move. We wondered around until we were lucky to find a cozy place to eat.
Apotekergården is in the center of the town. It has an outdoor garden with colorful light bulbs and beautiful flowers. We spent half of the night in the garden and the other half wondering around the alleys, looking at the blue sky.
Morning found us rested and full of energy. We borrowed bikes from Scandic and biked around the town.
What a great feeling to bike next to the archipelago, feel the sun on your face and just be alive!
“Your home is regarded as a model home, your life as a model life. But all this splendor, and you along with it… it’s just as though it were built upon a shifting quagmire. A moment may come, a word can be spoken, and both you and all this splendor will collapse.”
